Jon's Corner

Happy New Year and thank you for another wonderful year of letting us serve you. Each year, we look into the mirror and see our true colors. We have made significant progress but will continue to improve as a company and as a team. Our goal in this: to provide unparalleled customer service and build long-term relationships with you our valued customers.

I presented at TABS with Mary Forrester from Loomis Chaffee on the topic of “What's Next? Future Trends For School Web Communications.” We talked about new mobile technology coming out in the next couple of years. We analyzed web traffic by social media sites, mobile phones, direct traffic and other referrers. The part of the presentation that really stole the show, however, was “QR Code.”

What’s a QR Code?

A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

People were asking questions such as, “How do I create QR Codes?” and “How would I use them at our school?”  Just imagine the possibilities for school marketing such as this reunion postcard from Loomis Chaffee:

If you're on a desktop you just type in the smart URL. If you're on a phone just use your camera with one of the many QR code-reading apps.  The scan will pull up a page for you. Fantastically easy. Even I can do this!

Where do we get these QR Codes and how do we create them? Very simple. Go to your finalsite Page Manager, click Advanced then click Generate QR Code.  Very simple.

I'm looking forward to visiting with clients at CASE/NAIS and NAIS. Please stop by and say hello.

By the way if you read my last newsletter, we do have a bunch of happy chickens now.

Jon

A Different Kind of eNewsletter: Bear Creek's Story

“I can't thank finalsite enough for their help and support to create this. It just keeps getting better all the time!”

-Michelle Tresemer, Director of Marketing, Bear Creek School

arrow

The rules of the eNewsletter are changing. Mobile technology and shortening attention spans are forcing schools to rethink how they share information in HTML emails. There’s no one right way, but an innovative solution comes from Bear Creek School in Redmond, Washington.

Moving from a PDF version sent last year, this year’s eNewsletter pulls news items from several categories in finalsite’s News Manager. These are organized by categories (Athletics, Upper, All School, etc.), and the calendar pulls on the right banner.

Now, the format is professional and streamlined. No more downloads or clicking needed. Users are enthusiastic about the change and staff members are already making plans to improve the format with anchors and possibly shorter news summaries. School staff are more than happy to share their ideas: read more at finalsite Share or contact Michelle Tresemer, Bear Creek’s Director of Marketing, for help.

Did You Know?

Are People Viewing Your Media?
arrow

Tis the season for posting media: concert audio, video highlights from tournaments, holiday event slideshows, holiday greeting videos... the list goes on. You know your constituents love it, but sometimes you wish you could find out a little bit more about just how much they love it. How many times have they watched it? Are a lot of people watching it, or just a few people watching it multiple times? Are they downloading it or telling other people about it?

With the release of the new MultiMedia Manager this summer, the capability for finding answers to these questions in Google Analytics has been greatly expanded.

After logging into Google Analytics, go to Content > Event Tracking > Categories. In the list that appears, click on Media. The list you will then see represents the actions users can take in the MultiMedia Manager player to View, Search, Download, Embed, and Share various media (if Download, Embed, and Share options are enabled in the Folder or playlist settings). Click the screenshot at right to enlarge it.

Total Events refers to the total number of times each action was performed by users, counting multiple actions by the same users. Unique Events refers to the number of events minus repeated events by the same user (e.g. if Bill views an image 20 times he would generate 20 Total Events and 1 Unique Event). If the number of Total Events is much larger than the number of Unique Events, that tells you that people were returning to view the media or perform that action multiple times. Success! That means it's very interesting to them!

Clicking on any of the actions, such as View Image, will reveal a list of the file names experiencing that action, and the Total Events and Unique Events numbers for each file. Here is a short video (no sound) showing a report for the number of View Image actions (the number of times a slideshow image displayed). Note that this is where descriptive file naming of your media files can be useful. If your file name is VID_1019.mov you may have to do a little legwork in MultiMedia Manager to find exactly what that video was that people are watching so many times.

A couple bonus tips:

1. You can modify the date range covered in the report by clicking on the date range shown at the top of report and picking new start and end dates. If you can't find actions for a given media object, try expanding the time range.

2. You can have reports you generate emailed to you or anyone else at scheduled intervals by clicking on the Email button at the top of the report. Great for tracking usage of long-term media like Admissions videos.
